Cycle 2020

28 September 2020

The Irish Pilgrimage Trust's 2020 Sponsored CYCLE to LOURDES did not proceed in April due to the coronavirus pandemic. The decision to defer the event was communicated to all concerned in early March 2020. This is the first time since 1984 that the biennial Cycle did not take place. Within days of taking that very difficult decision Europe went into lockdown, underlining that the correct course of action had been taken.

Following deferral the Trust and Cycle organisers immediately began to process of seeking the recovery of all deposits for flights, Hotel bookings, Ferry bookings and other expenses relating to the event. Thankfully, we have been very fortunate in securing the return of practically all funds outlayed.

The coronavirus situation has evolved over the past few months and Europe is just now begining to slowly emerge from the restrictions and lockdown imposed last March. However, the course of recovery and return to 'normal' is filled with uncertainty. News of the disease recurring in some areas is beginning to filter through.

While we remain hopeful for the future, the Cycle Organisers and the Trust cannot make a decision about a new date for our Cycle at this point in time. As always, we will be led by the best available Medical advice, Government, EU and WHO recommendations and travel restrictions within France in advance. The Cycle organisers submited their report to the Board of Trustees AGM held in September 2020. The Board decided that the Trust Cycle will not take place in France in 2021. They expressed the hope that the organisers can run a cycle in Ireland for registered members of Cycle 2020 during the summer of 2021 subject to conditions being suitable at that time. The Board will be kept informed by the cycle organisers and will conssider any future proposals and plans as they arise.

In the meantime please stay safe and we wish all our Cycle Team well during these difficult times.

Registered Members of the Cycle 2020 team or anyone interested in our Cycle can contact our Cycle Organiser James McHugh directly by email to or on mobile number +353 (0)87 250 8074

In this short video you will learn more about the Trusts sponsored Cycle to Lourdes.

The Irish Pilgrimage Trust organised it's first Sponsored Cycle to Lourdes in 1984 to raise much needed funding for the Trust. The Cycle to Lourdes quickly became an established biennial Sponsored Cycle and is an established Trust Group.

The Trust is primarily funded by our volunteers fundraising activities and by private donations to allow us to serve children and young people with additional needs.

Membership of the Trust's cycling group, our exclusive La Brise Cycling Club, is only available to persons who participate in the Cycle to Lourdes. Contact our Cycle Organiser James McHugh directly on +353 (0)87 250 8074 or at our office on +353 (0)91 796622 or email if you wish to find out more about this very unique and special event.
