The Irish Pilgrimage Trust's 2020 Sponsored CYCLE to LOURDES did not proceed in April due to the coronavirus pandemic. The decision to defer the event was communicated to all concerned in early March 2020. This is the first time since 1984 that the biennial Cycle did not take place. Within days of taking that very difficult decision Europe went into lockdown, underlining that the correct course of action had been taken.
Following deferral the Trust and Cycle organisers immediately began to process of seeking the recovery of all deposits for flights, Hotel bookings, Ferry bookings and other expenses relating to the event. Thankfully, we have been very fortunate in securing the return of practically all funds outlayed.
The coronavirus situation has evolved over the past few months and Europe is just now begining to slowly emerge from the restrictions and lockdown imposed last March. However, the course of recovery and return to 'normal' is filled with uncertainty. News of the disease recurring in some areas is beginning to filter through.
While we remain hopeful for the future, the Cycle Organisers and the Trust cannot make a decision about a new date for our Cycle at this point in time. As always, we will be led by the best available Medical advice, Government, EU and WHO recommendations and travel restrictions within France in advance. The Cycle organisers will submit their report to the Board of Trustees who will then consider the future running of the Cycle event during it's meeting in September 2020. The Cycle organisers will communicate with all registered members of Cycle 2020 following the Board meeting.
